Statement of intent
The aim for this project is to accumulate a number of images which will all blatantly convey a different type of feeling associated with the theme 'texture' - Textures of objects and even nature.
Initially, upon being put in to the position of choosing my exam question, question seven was one which resulted in me feeling a little perplexed however, after a little bit of in depth research, I came to the conclusion that exploring the theme of texture as my exam question, and to build a page in which I explore different perspectives of photography grasping on to moments of seeing a form of texture will create a very meaningful page.
Production of sets of images that you will be able to see as I progress on this page will consist of ideas which may have been highly influenced and anticipated by my chosen researched artists such as Lorna Simpson ,Paul Mitchell , Bill Mangold and Aaron Siskind.Their work is such beauty, and includes a lot of simplicity yet requires a large amount of creativity and the ability thoroughly think things through. Both of these artists unhesitatingly manage to display images with great amounts of photo-graphical knowledge and I wish to do the same.
These photographs will be taken on a camera. The Canon DSLR. I will use this camera and apply my knowledge of camera settings. I will use the camera on manual as it will help me control certain settings. Using exposure to allow my pictures to come out with the best result as lighting is a key factor in photography and types of images you may wish to portray - Depth of Field;to have the ability to control how much is in focus and how much is not is a vital skill as it can make the picture or not.
I will try to include every little detail, each of which will make a major or slight change to my work whether it be as little as adding subheadings or screenshots of any manipulation to my images in order to boost my grade. On this project of my course a lot of focus will be on staying on top of deadlines and follow a timeline for the next two months to complete almost everything. As my work on this page progresses over time, I will strive to enhance any completed work and add improvements.
To show my growth and development I want to try and go to different locations and to also give my personal feeling I aim to take lots of photographs outside of school and mostly at home. As the topic is the connection between people I hope to use my own family to show the relationship I have with this topic. From then I want use a range of objects to display the textures between objects. I hope to do at least 4-5 shoots given the time frame. Overall I want to produce a range of photos that clearly depict the true meaning of textures of Nature and family . I want my final Project to be extraordinary and memorable and I hope to achieve a good grade through my hard work and dedication to photography.
I hope to delve in to photographs and analyse to the best of my ability; I hope that this project has the best outcome.

Aaron Siskind was an editor and photographer, who was best known for his abstract photography. It was the accidental landing of a camera in his hand when he had his first stint at photography. He started off as a social documentary photographer producing series such as Harlem Documentary, a survey of life in Harlem. He drew inspiration from anything abstract such as road surfaces, peeling plaster, road signs and graffiti. His work consisted of close-up details of pavement, rocks, lava flows and painted walls

Bill Mangold is a veteran photographer based in Sebastian, . Although most of his early photos were candid and what we today call “street photography,” only some of his pictures fall in to this section. As you can see in the gallery below, most of pictures are an outstanding collections of nature photographs with a wide range of subjects and styles ranging from abstract nature images to animal behavior .Bill Mangold inspires with his macro photography of unpredictable subjects: animals and insects letting himself to create the best results.

Lorna Simpson
Using the 5Cs
Lorna Simpson (born 13 August 1960) is an African-American photographer and multimedia artist who made her name in the 1980s and 1990s with artworks such as Guarded Conditions and Square Deal. Her works have been included in numerous exhibitions both nationally and internationally. She is best known for her photo-text installations, photo collages, and films.Simpson's work Guarded Conditions, created in 1989, was one in a series in which Simpson has assembled fragmented Polaroid images of a female model whom she has regularly collaborated with. The body is fragmented and viewed from behind, while the back of the model's head is sensed as being in a state of guardedness towards possible hostility she can anticipate as a result of the combination of her sex and the color of her skin. The complex historical and symbolic associations of African-American hairstyles are also brought into play. The message of the text and the formal treatment of the image reinforce a sense of vulnerability. The fragmentation and serialization of bodily images disrupts and denies the body's wholeness and individuality. In attempting to read the work the viewer is provoked into confronting histories of appropriation and consumption of the black female body.
|
The theme of this image is the texture of skin and color which I have chosen to base my theme on, there are multiple ideas which I can take from this photo and use it to improve and make my grade higher. What I am planning to take from this photo is that I want to initially print out my work and display is in a certain order which shows the textures of the different age groups skin texture. In my opinion I think there is multiple interpretations which are behind this photo, for example it could be something to do with equality or messages.
This photo is in black and white as this helps towards the picture standing out and also helps it to send the message across as it gives off a thinking tone. |
From this image I like the way the photographer has taken the images and them printed them out and then hanged them up and added little quotes with strong meanings then taken another photo which then manipulated it through Photoshop to create a sense of satisfaction from the texture. The strengths are that photographer has successfully darken the skin tone of the person of the picture which tells me that this photographer works at a high standard.

Paul Mitchell
Using the 5Cs
This photograph from a wide selection of Paul Mitchells images is the one I liked most due to the fact that it's an image which contains lots of natural texture, which only contains the 3 types of brown shade. This image evidently shows a form of a texture as it's an image which includes the detail of a huge rock or landscape - the use of rock or landscape shows the indepth deail of the beautiful nature that exists.
It's a coloured image, and the lack of different colours allows you to not be distracted. The colours used has an effect which shows the importance of textures, and it comes through the picture as we are still able to identify the fact that its an different landscape somewhere away from civilization
A majority of this image is in focus but the edges around, which seems to be the bends in between the rocks which then allows it to zoom out and let the viewer focus on different aspects of this photograph such as the shapes and the contrasting effect included. The picture also seems to include the framing effect
This image has different shapes included. For example; circles and lines. Shapes in an image create different effects depending on what they may be and can also be interpreted as one wishes - for me, personally, the circles in this photograph symbolize unity and something satasfying. There is a contrasting effect with the shades of a darkened colour - they're both placed adjacent to each other and in order to link it back to the theme of texture.
This image instantly became one which I was attracted to, due to it's high level of simplicity and will try my best to create similar styled images. I will do so by using objects which could be used on a day to day basis as it allows you to see the type of connection and also use Photoshop to make it seem more similar.

Plan for the first shoot
Project : Texture Photography
My First shoot : I need to try and get a series of photos which include the natural textures such as the textures as age is an factor as this effects the smoothness , also I have in mind to take pictures of other natural textures such as rocks, walls floors made out of wood.I hope to do at least 4-5 shoots given the time frame. Overall I want to produce a range of photos that clearly depict the true meaning of textures of Nature and family. This will help contribute towards my final outcome which i hope to be strong.
Location notes – permission, studio, weather:
My main inspiration are the photographers Lorna Simpson ,Paul Mitchell , Bill Mangol as they all include my ideas and also the way they have manipulated their images.
Techniques/processes you will use to achieve your aims:
In order for me to get the high standard images i need to use my the depth of field in order for my outcome to show the texture in greater detail
Equipment notes: In order to succeed I will need the correct equipment which will be a small tripod, lighting and a camera with a great zoom lens.
Props: Items or people containing texture.
Equipment check:
Battery charged (the day before)

Brennand-Wood
I really like what brennand-wood has done in this photo, this has aspired me to think about how I take his style and apply it to my work , my initial idea is that for my first part of the exam I want to take photos of natural and man-made texture which then I will print out and cut them into perfect same size circles which then I will hang up in a selective order of man-made vs natural textures and then capture the shot at a angle which can give us the view of the different textures which are very satisfying and beautiful, I need to make sure I use a bright background preferable white so the textures will stand out a lot more.
Christopher Gryder
For my second part of my exam I want to try and replicate Christopher Gryder work as the he has inserted different types of texture which he has captured and had put it all in to a circular template which gives off a tile look which I really like and want to go for also I want to and try and do this by capturing similar texture which then I print out and cut them in to shapes of this tile look.
Test 1
Test 2
Preparation for the third test:
I have chosen the areas of each photo where the textures are the strongest then I will try and to group them together, in order to create a geometric circle which contains 3 similar textures in the center and two differing texture at the top and bottom, this shows the contrasting textures of nature and man made textures.

Outcomes |
Layering of texture
Test 4 |
Outcome |
From layering two different texture the outcome was average which as some detail of the two contrasting texture of the brick wall and the crack within it and also the texture of the tree trunk and the color of the tree, overall I like this as there is a mix of two different texture which have been blended together.

29/04/19 From this point I will not touch my preparation as the work done beyond this point is my exam.
Exam work 1 29/04/19
For my first piece of work leading up me my final outcome, I decided to take 4 strong pictures which show strong natural texture as this is a strong contrast to the one picture I chose to represent man-made textures which shows the beauty of nature cannot be recreated by humans.
Exam work 2
In my second piece leading up to my final outcome I have chosen to 2 pictures which represent natural texture and 3 pictures which represent man made texture, by doing this I want to bring the similarity of the both and use them to create a vibrant picture.
Exam work 3
I really like this outcome as I used only textures from natural rock which contained beautiful texture in between the crack which I use at my advantage to create a picture with beautiful parts of nature.
Exam work 4
In this photo I used a variety of pictures which I have taken from natural and man made then I thought to place natural texture in the center with only wood being the man made one as it will contrast really well with other textures, as for the background I used a completely different color then I used in the middle I did this so the contrast between nature and man made will stand out.
Exam work 5
In this picture I went with a all natural nature/forest look as I used mainly green based and natural textures such as in this case I used wood, stone, tree trunk and bushes, by doing this i successfully achieved my goal as I was able to create a texture circle which is based around mainly natural textures.
03/05/19 Second exam
Exam work 6 (1 of 5 idea 1 final outcome)
For this outcome I combined some of my work form the previous exam session carefully, as for this outcome I used mainly natural texture as I wanted to create a sense of of overwhelming with texture from nature as this will be used later on in my last exam session to create a huge contrast between natural and man made textures.
Exam work 7 (2 of 5 idea 1 final outcome)
Opposite to the one on top I used a variety of man made textures however I kept my natural textures selection small as I wanted to overwhelm the picture with mainly man made textures as it then can help outline the contrast between the two as there is something to counter.
Exam work 8 (3 of 5 idea 1 final outcome)
In this photo which I have manipulated I used an even amount of man made and natural textures as this sits together really nicely as the colors all bind together in order to create a perfectly balanced photo.
Exam work 9 (4 of 5 idea 1 final outcome)
By the use of Photoshop I was able to combine multiple outcomes which I have created through the process of rasturizing the layer and then inserting the picture and then by creating a clipping mask I can put a picture into a specific mold which I created prior to in inserting the photo.
Exam work 10 (5 of 5 idea 1 final outcome)
07/05/19 Final exam
With this last part of the exam I chose to keep it simple but very effective, as in this example I have combined most of my work which I think is very effective and placed them on a canvas as some pictures where sticking out as I glued block of Styrofoam to it , also with all my photos photos I chose to go outside and use the green grass , brick floor and the bench which had textures of both the ground and the bench and some just the white canvas as my background as it will help me widen the range of colors used in this picture , also i used two small pictures which where colored in black and white as it would help massively show the contrast between the different textures with the colors, then I used Photoshop to make the photo more rich in colors as this would also help the photo to deliver the combination of the different textures and the contrast between them.
Exam work 11 ( 1 of 5 final outcome)
Exam work 12 ( 2 of 5 final outcome)
Exam work 13 ( 3 of 5 final outcome)
Exam work 14 ( 4 of 5 final outcome)
Exam work 16 ( 5 of 5 final outcome)
Project Evaluation
I chose the the question (Q1) textures and I interpreted it in ways to deliver a personal outcome . Within the project I was determined to go with a certain theme. After a elongated time of deciding my instincts gave me the idea of "Nature vs man". This opened a various of doors for me as I was able to use the theme in multiple ways, it also gave me the opportunity to present different forms of man made and natural textures. Exploring the contrasting textures enhanced my learning and I was able to portray that in my photographs.Texture is a very explicative theme which is one of the main reasons why I instantly chose to it. I took this questions in many ways , from studio shots and even taking personal photos. I feels as though I was able to present my ideas and creativity.
I believe the theme fits me perfectly as I certainly did enjoy every aspect of this exam process. I enjoyed working on the whole project however coming up with a theme and taking different sets of shoots was what I had enjoyed the most. This was mainly because of the vision that I had and seeing that coming to life in my photos really gave me a sense of happiness and control over my work. I loved the way all my shoots turned out and I owe it all to time, effort and planning that went into it. I was exceptionally happy with all my outcomes due to the mere fact I wanted my project to be as personal as possible, I feel as though all my shoots reflect that. Within my project the most interesting part was coming up with many ideas that showed the textures between nature and man. I loved planning and setting up in location for all my shoots, however one thing I honestly did dislike was getting all the lighting setup due to the fact it took quite a bit of time to get the right amount of lighting I needed for each of my shoots. The struggle of constantly moving the lights and placing them in a fixed position was sometimes aggravating, however along the process of getting my exam together I learnt many techniques.
During this process I learnt multiple techniques I thought I never would be able to do or even think of using in my photos. First and foremost setting up and planning shoots are so important for a successful outcome. This was an extreme learning curve as I planned all my shoots and took my time to set them up. The main technique I used in my photos was certainly the lighting and portraying that was necessary to gain a powerful textures photo in photoshop. I used desk lamps and professional photoshoot lights to get professional photos. One technique I did learn was to take a few photos first to get the the accurate amount of lighting. This helped because once my lighting was perfectly set I was able to take amazing photos , as seen above. Another technique I learned and used throughout my project was in photoshop. As my main idea was to turn all my photos into geometric shapes which shows the contrast between the different textures , I first saturated the photo before anything to start with a clean and simple photo. I believe it was helpful as it gave me a chance to expirement with the curves tool and adjustment levels. I wanted a sharp colour around the edged and throughout the images.
I researched a various of photographers as seen above however on main artist I was instantly drawn to was Brennand-Wood , His portfolio really inspired me and from them I came up with the idea of contrast between textures. I feel as though his work was unique and something different than what most photographers had of their intrepration of textures. I feel as though Brennand-Wood introduced me to a variety of ideas I could implement in my phtotos. I was very inspired with how Booth presented and captured in photos, the detail of the textures is something I noticed first while researching him, this influenced me to make my photos high quality types of textures to show the simple and powerful side of my photos. Furthermore I loved the way Booth used multiple objects to display the textures of man made items such as tiles. I wanted to do something similar however I added my own interpration with the idea of the circular tiles. Lastly the main aspect of Brennand-Wood photos I was intrigued by was the natural approach he had to capturing the photo, this was something I wanted to work on throughout my shoots and was successful in doing so by using Brennand-Wood
work as an example.
Finally, I believe as though I have managed and presented a very successful exam. I have taken oppourtunites throughout the exam and grasped onto every idea I had. This whole exam has been exceptional, I am proud of the hard work and determination I had. Given the time period I feel as though I have done way more than I thought I could, hence why I am pleased with the outcome.
